My Brother Sam is Dead is a historical fiction novel. It is a story about a boy named Tim who's brother wants to go fight in the Revolutionary War as a patirot. However, Tim's father sees no reason to the war and is strongly against Sam going to fight in it. Tim is confused on whether he should stay a loyalist or become a patriot. Tension begins to really grow within the family. When Sam leaves, Tim begins to grow up a little more as he takes over his brother's responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is travelling on foot for three days to sell their cattle. But when Tim's father gets captured on their way home from the trip, he is forced to be the only man in his own house. When Sam returns home but refuses to stay, things really get complicated.
In the book, the stuggles of the rebel soldiers are mentioned many times. When retired soldiers travel through Tim's town, they talk about the long marches and many other things. When Sam visits his brother, he speaks of his lack of food each day. The soldiers actually steal cattle from passing farms to eat their meals. However, stealing cattle is a felony and punishable by death.
